What Is a Lipoma?

A lipoma is a soft lump that forms just beneath the skin. These benign growths are made up of fat cells, can occur anywhere on the body, and typically develop slowly over time. While lipomas are usually harmless, they can become noticeable, varying in size from less than an inch to several inches across.

Lipomas vs Moles And Cysts

Lipomas are often mistaken for other common lumps, such as moles or cysts. Moles are small, pigmented skin growths that form when pigment cells cluster together. While most moles are harmless, some may change in size, shape, or color, and require medical attention.

Cysts are fluid-filled sacs that form beneath the skin. Most cysts are harmless but can sometimes become inflamed or infected if they burst. Dr Loizides also performs mole and cyst removal, as well as scar revision, and will advise you on the best treatment.

Are Lipomas Harmful or Benign?

Lipomas are benign (non-cancerous) growths, meaning they do not pose a serious health risk. Unlike cancerous tumors, lipomas do not invade surrounding tissues or spread to other areas of the body. In most cases, they are completely harmless and do not require medical treatment.

While lipomas are usually painless, they can sometimes cause discomfort depending on where they are situated. If one forms near a nerve or in areas like the armpit, along the spine, or over a joint, it may press on surrounding tissues, leading to tenderness. Larger or deeper lipomas can also create a sense of pressure, especially if they develop close to muscles or sensitive areas.

Why Do Lipomas Occur?

The exact cause of lipomas is not fully understood. But, several factors may contribute to their development:

  • Genetics: There is evidence suggesting lipomas can run in families. Some people tend to develop multiple lipomas, a condition known as familial multiple lipomatosis.
  • Age: Lipomas are most commonly diagnosed in people between the ages of 40 and 60.
  • Trauma: Some studies suggest that physical trauma or injury to a specific area may trigger the growth of a lipoma, though this connection is still debated.

While these may increase the likelihood of developing lipomas, in many cases, they appear without any identifiable cause.

Signs You Should Consider Lipoma Removal

Most lipomas don’t require treatment, but removal may be the best option if the lump is causing pain, growing larger, or affecting your comfort and confidence. Lipomas that develop in sensitive areas can become uncomfortable, especially when pressed against. Some may also cause irritation due to friction or frequent movement.

You should consult with a doctor if your lipoma changes in size or texture, feels firm, or grows larger than 2 inches. While lipomas are benign, a professional evaluation with Dr Loizides can confirm the nature of the growth and rule out other conditions.

What Are Your Lipoma Removal Options?

There are two techniques for lipoma removal, depending on the size and location of the lump. For smaller lipomas, there is suction-assisted removal, which uses a needle and syringe or a small tube, similar to liposuction, to extract the fatty tissue. This method results in minimal scarring and a shorter recovery time.

For larger or deeper lipomas, surgical excision is the most effective approach. A small incision is made over the lump, and the fatty tissue is carefully removed. The skin is then sutured, leaving as little scarring as possible. Dr. Loizides will discuss the best option during your consultation.

What Happens During Lipoma Removal Surgery in Ottawa, ON?

Lipoma removal is a straightforward and minimally invasive procedure performed under local anesthesia. If needed, a mild sedative may be offered to help you relax. The procedure begins with a small incision over the lipoma, the lump is removed, closed with sutures, and a dressing is applied. The entire procedure typically takes less than an hour, and you can go home the same day.

What to Expect During Recovery After Lipoma Removal

Recovery after lipoma removal is generally quick with only mild swelling or bruising, which improves within a few days. Most light activities can be resumed right away, though it’s best to avoid strenuous exercise or heavy lifting for a short time to allow for proper healing. Any mild discomfort can be managed with over-the-counter pain relief if needed.

Can You Prevent Lipomas From Returning?

There’s no way to completely prevent new lipomas from forming after having one removed. Since lipomas often develop due to genetic factors rather than lifestyle choices, some people may be more prone to them than others. You should keep an eye on any new lumps and have them checked if they change or grow.
