What Is Male Breast Reduction Surgery?
Male breast reduction surgery, also called gynecomastia surgery or reduction mammaplasty, is a procedure to remove excess glandular tissue and fat from the breast, tighten and reposition loose or hanging skin, and correct the appearance of the areola.
Why Might I Consider Male Breast Reduction Surgery?
You might benefit from male breast reduction surgery if you are self-conscious or embarrassed about the appearance of your chest because of overdeveloped breasts or if your breasts cause physical discomfort. Male breast reduction surgery can:
- Restore a sense of pride in your appearance
- Eliminate feelings of discomfort about removing your shirt to swim, exercise, or play sports, or during intimate moments
- Improve your self-confidence
Male breast reduction surgery can also be performed to correct breast asymmetry, when one breast is enlarged to a greater degree than the other.
What Is Gynecomastia?
Gynecomastia is the development of enlarged breasts in men. It can begin before puberty and progress with age. It can also begin in adulthood due to weight gain, hormonal changes, heredity, or the use of certain drugs. Gynecomastia can also be a symptom of certain medical conditions.
When male breasts become enlarged because of excess fat, weight loss with diet and exercise may correct the problem. When excess glandular tissue is the cause, and any potential medical problems have been ruled out or addressed, cosmetic surgery is required to reduce breast volume and create a more masculine appearing chest.

How Is Male Breast Reduction Surgery Performed?
Male breast reduction surgery is performed using one of two methods or a combination of both. The surgery may be performed using general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation. As part of your consultation, Dr. Loizides will explain the surgical approach he proposes for your procedure.
Liposuction is used to remove excess fat from the breasts. In a liposuction procedure, small incisions are made, through which a thin surgical tube or cannula is inserted. The fat to be removed is broken up using any of several methods and extracted through the cannula. Liposuction alone may be used to reduce breasts that are moderately enlarged with fatty tissue.
Surgical excision is used to remove excess glandular tissue from the breasts and to correct stretched, saggy skin. Incision placement will depend on the specifics of the procedure, but they are most often made around the areola or in the natural creases of the chest, where resulting scars will be less noticeable. The areola may be reduced in size if it has stretched. The nipple may be repositioned if the breasts have sagged.
Once the corrections have been made, the incisions are closed, and the chest is bandaged and wrapped with a compression garment. After the surgery is complete and you are fully alert, you will be able to go home. You should arrange ahead of time to have a friend or family member drive you home when you are discharged. Depending on the extent of the surgery, you may need to have someone stay with you for the first day.
What to Expect in Recovery
You will need to rest at home after your surgery. You can expect to experience some soreness for the first few days, which can be treated with prescription or over-the-counter pain medication. The recovery process varies from person to person, but most men can return to office-type work after a few days. You’ll be advised to avoid strenuous activity for about two weeks, then gradually build up to normal levels of activity over the next few weeks.
