Lip Augmentation in Ottawa with Dr. Loizides
Lip augmentation is a treatment to add volume to or enhance the shape of the lips to make the face look more attractive. Why Might I Consider Lip Augmentation?
Lip augmentation makes a patient’s lips fuller and their face more attractive. Both men and women can benefit from lip augmentation to correct asymmetry and bring facial features into better harmony.
You might consider lip augmentation if you are unhappy with the appearance of your face because of:
- Thin lips—lips that have grown thinner with age or that have always been thin
- Lips that disappear when you smile
- Lips that lack definition
- Lips that turn down at the corners, giving an unhappy expression when at rest
- Lips that don’t complement your other facial features
- Uneven or asymmetrical lips
- Fine wrinkles and lines around the mouth
What Are the Options for Lip Augmentation?
Dr. Loizides offers a range of lip augmentation treatments and procedure options.
Dermal filler injections are the fastest and easiest—and least permanent—option for plumping and smoothing the lips. Special formulations of dermal fillers are made for the lips. These fillers add volume to the lips with a natural look, feel, and flexibility. Each filler treatment lasts from a few months to a year and can be refreshed when the results begin to fade. Some women have dermal filler treatments to determine what they might look like with lip enhancement before considering a more permanent procedure.
Fat grafting adds volume to the lips using injections of fat from your own body for long-lasting results. In fat grafting, unwanted fat is removed using liposuction from another part of the body (abdomen, thighs, upper arms, or chin), processed and purified, then injected into the lips.
Tissue grafting is another way to combine a separate cosmetic procedure with lip augmentation. When excess skin is removed from part of the body in a plastic surgery procedure, a small portion of the inner layer of the removed skin is inserted into the lip through an incision inside the mouth.
Vermillion Lip Advancement
Vermillion is the term for the pink tissue of the lips, the darker tissue that makes lips noticeable. In a vermillion lip advancement procedure, some of the skin just above the vermillion border of the lip is removed and the vermillion is extended to make it more prominent and give the lips greater definition.
In a lip lift, a sliver of excess skin is removed from the area between the upper lip and the base of the nose. The remaining skin above the lip is pulled upward, extending the pink area (vermillion) of the upper lip. One variation on the lip-lift procedure raises the outside corners of the lips to create a more aesthetically pleasing at-rest expression. Another shortens the upper lip to expose more of the teeth.

What to Expect During Your Lip Augmentation Treatment or Procedure?
Lip augmentation treatments using dermal filler injections are performed in our office. We may use a topical anesthetic to minimize discomfort during treatment. A very fine needle is used to inject the filler precisely where it is needed, using formulations and amounts selected to produce the most natural-looking results.
Treatment usually takes about 15 minutes. When the treatment is complete, you are free to resume your normal daily activities.
Surgical lip-augmentation procedures and fat grafting involving liposuction are usually performed using local anesthesia and mild sedation. As part of your consultation, Dr. Loizides will explain the surgical approach he proposes and the expected length of the procedure.
After the surgery is complete and you are fully alert, you will be able to go home. Prior to your surgery, You should arrange to have a friend or family member drive you home when you are discharged and stay with you for the first night.
What to Expect After the Lip Augmentation Treatment or Procedure
There is no downtime or recovery period after lip augmentation with dermal fillers. You will see your results right away, though you may experience some minor swelling or bruising in the days right after treatment. Dr. Loizides will instruct you to avoid strenuous activity, extensive sun exposure, and the use of aspirin and other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications for the first 24 hours.
Recovery from surgical lip augmentation can take one to two weeks. Because the lips are dense with vascular tissue, they are particularly prone to swelling, and residual swelling can take a few weeks to subside. Dr. Loizides will provide you with complete care instructions during the healing process, including when he’d like to see you for follow-up visits. He will be available to answer any questions you have and address any concerns.
