Am I a Good Candidate for a Mommy Makeover?
You may be a good candidate for a mommy makeover if you:
- Are bothered by loose, saggy, or hanging skin on your abdomen
- Are unhappy with the shape, size, or projection of your breasts
- Have pockets of fat on your body that resist slimming with diet and exercise
- Are in generally good health and close to your ideal weight
A mommy makeover is not generally recommended if you:
- Smoke and are unable to quit for several weeks before and after the procedure
- Have certain health conditions, such as diabetes or heart problems
- Are significantly overweight
If you are a woman who plans to get pregnant, you may want to wait to have a mommy makeover until you are done having children. The improvements made with a tummy tuck or breast surgery can be lost with a future pregnancy.
The best candidates for a mommy makeover have realistic expectations for the results of the combined procedures and an understanding of the risks.
What Is a Mommy Makeover?
A mommy makeover is a combination of surgical procedures, customized to your needs, to sculpt your body, tighten loose or sagging skin, and eliminate bulges of unwanted fat. The choice of procedures is up to you, to be selected in consultation with Dr. Loizides. It may include:
- A tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) to flatten, smooth, and tone your abdomen by removing excess skin and fat and, as needed, repairing separated abdominal muscles.
- Breast surgery to improve the shape, projection, and size of your breasts, including a breast lift to raise sagging breasts, possibly combined with breast augmentation or breast reduction.
- Liposuction to remove diet- and exercise-resistant pockets of fat around the waist, hips, thighs, buttocks, upper arms, or neck, or elsewhere on your body.
While these are the most common elements in a mommy makeover, they may not be the ones you need. Other surgical procedures to correct stretched or sagging skin and excess fat include arm lift (brachioplasty), back lift, thigh lift, butt lift, facelift, and brow lift. Fat removed from one part of the body with liposuction can be processed for injection in an area that needs more volume (known as fat transfer). Surgical procedures can also be combined with non-surgical procedures, such as injections of dermal fillers and neuromodulators (Botox or Xeomin).
In your consultation with Dr. Loizides, he will perform a thorough physical examination, ask questions to understand how you would like to improve your appearance, and recommend the safest and most effective combination of treatments for your mommy makeover.

- ways to manage swelling and discomfort
- when to come in for follow-up visits to check on your progress.

FAQ
Mommy Makeover
A mommy makeover combines a breast procedure with a tummy procedure. Usually we perform a breast lift (with possible addition of an implant) and an abdominoplasty (tummy tuck). Liposuction of the armpit areas and flanks is also often performed.
Full recovery takes about 6 weeks. However, within a few days, patients are able to do normal day-to-day activities go for walks etc. (as long as there is no heavy lifting).
It depends. Patients that are very heavy (we use Body Mass Index – BMI as a guide) with a BMI greater than 35 are at high risk of having complications and unsatisfactory results. Ideally BMI should be below 32. Having a healthier weight will increase the chances of having a good recovery and will improve the cosmetic results.
A breast lift and tummy tuck usually takes between 3.5 and 5 hours depending on the patient.
For the first two weeks it’s preferable to sleep on your back with your waist slightly flexed, meaning you should have a second or third pillow to elevate your head. After that you can start removing the extra pillows. Sleeping on your side can begin around the 2-3 week mark if it does not feel uncomfortable. Sleeping on your stomach should be avoided until at least 6 weeks after surgery.
It is preferable to wait. If you have a mommy makeover and then get pregnant, skin in the breasts and abdomen will stretch again which may affect long term results. That being said, sometimes women are not sure if they want to continue growing their family but would really like to proceed with the surgery. In those cases, it is important to mention this to your surgeon and understand that long term results may be affected if you go ahead with the procedure and then have more children. Another procedure or touch-up might be necessary in the future in those cases.
Walking is encouraged a few days after surgery. Core workouts should only be started at 6 weeks post surgery. Lifting greater than 10lbs should also be avoided for the first 4-6 weeks.
If you are at a healthy weight, maintain it. If you need to lose weight, do this in a healthy way. Surgery is a traumatic event for your body, so the better shape you are in prior to the surgery, the easier the recovery on your body. So continue exercise routines prior to surgery.
The short answer is yes. There is a limit to how long a patient should stay under general anesthesia and how much liposuction can be performed in one surgery. As long as we stay safely below those limits (which should not be a concern during a mommy makeover) then the surgery is safe.
A special surgical bra and abdominal binder should be worn for the first six weeks after surgery. We will provide you with those garments.
Ideally, we want to wait six months for your abdominal skin to recover from the pregnancy. Also, it’s preferable to wait until you’ve reached your post-pregnancy weight goals. If we perform a tummy tuck and you continue losing a significant amount of weight, the results will not be as pleasing.
