Liposuction

Liposuction in Ottawa with Dr. Loizides

Liposuction is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that slims and reshapes areas of the body by removing stubborn pockets of fat — fat deposits that are resistant to slimming with diet and exercise. In a liposuction procedure, fat is removed through a small cannula (a thin surgical tube) inserted through small incisions in your skin. Liposuction can be used to reduce or eliminate bulges of fat almost anywhere on your body — around your waist, on your thighs, or under your chin, for example.

The fat removed with liposuction can be processed for injection into a part of your body or face where more volume is wanted, a combination procedure known as fat grafting. Fat grafting can be used to fill in hollowed areas below your eyes, plump your lips, smooth facial wrinkles, or augment your breasts or buttocks while slimming areas with unwanted fat.

Am I a Good Candidate for Liposuction?

You may be a good candidate for liposuction if you are:

  • bothered by stubborn pockets of fat on specific parts of your body or face
  • in generally good health
  • close to (within 20 to 30 pounds of) your ideal weight

Liposuction is not generally recommended if you are significantly overweight. Also, if you have loose, hanging skin, liposuction alone will not be an effective solution; it can be combined with a skin tightening or lifting procedure.

The best candidates for liposuction have realistic expectations for the results of the procedure and an understanding of the risks.

Why Might I Consider Liposuction?

Liposuction can remove areas of exercise- and diet-resistant fat almost anywhere on the body. You might benefit from liposuction if you are bothered by stubborn pockets of excess fat on your:

  • abdomen and waist
  • hips
  • upper arms
  • back
  • chest
  • buttocks
  • thighs
  • calves and ankles
  • chin
  • cheeks
  • neck

Liposuction can reduce fat in male breasts for a more masculine look and as part of a female breast reduction procedure. It can give women a more defined waistline and slimmer thighs. It can be used to eliminate bulges of fat under the chin or on the neck. Liposuction can be combined with many other procedures, including tummy tuck (abdominoplasty), breast augmentation, breast reduction, facelift, and eyelid surgery

Liposuction is a body-contouring procedure, not a weight-loss method. While a moderate amount of fat can be removed with liposuction, the goal of the procedure is to improve the body’s lines, curves, and contours rather than to reduce overall weight.

Liposuction is most effective when used on areas of the body with resilient, elastic skin that smooths and tightens naturally after fat is removed.

How Is Liposuction Performed?

Liposuction is performed using local anesthesia with a sedative or general anesthesia, depending on the part of the body being treated and the extent of the fat being removed. Dr. Loizides may make marks on your skin to use as guides during treatment.

Once the anesthesia or numbing has taken effect, small incisions are made where the fat is to be removed, and a thin tube (a cannula) is inserted. The fat is broken down for removal using any of several methods:

Tumescent liposuction is when sterile fluid is injected into the area of fat

Ultrasound-assisted liposuction (UAL) is when ultrasound energy liquefies the fat tissue

Laser-assisted liposuction (LAL) is when high-intensity laser light from a laser fiber inserted into the fat breaks it down for extraction

Power-assisted liposuction (PAL) is when the end of the cannula is moved back and forth in a rapid motion to break up the fat for removal

The procedure usually takes one to three hours, depending on how many areas are treated and the amount of fat removed.

After the procedure is complete and you are fully alert, you will be able to go home. In some cases, you will stay overnight for observation. You should arrange ahead of time to have a friend or family member drive you home.

What to Expect in Recovery

The treated areas are secured with compression bandages or garments, which promote healing, reduce post-operative swelling, and reduce discomfort. You’ll wear these for a few weeks as you heal. You may also go home with drainage tubes in the incisions. Expect to feel some discomfort in the first week or so, and plan to spend a few days resting quietly at home.

Dr. Loizides will provide you with complete instructions on

  • activities that are recommended and those that should be avoided
  • care of the incisions (and drainage tubes, if used)
  • steps to take to manage swelling and discomfort
  • when to come in for follow-up visits to check on your progress.

The recovery process varies from person to person, but most patients require a few days off work. Typically, light activities and exercise can be resumed after two weeks. Other activities can gradually be resumed after four to six weeks.
