What Is an Arm Lift?

An arm lift, or brachioplasty, is surgery to restore an attractive appearance to the upper arms after skin has loosened and sagged. With age or after significant weight loss, hanging skin can drape beneath the upper arms when they are held outstretched, sometimes weighted with excess fat. (One unflattering term for this condition is “bat wing arms.”) An arm lift removes excess skin from the upper arm, from the armpit to the elbow, and lifts and tightens underlying tissues. When needed, liposuction is used with the procedure to remove excess fat.

What Is a Thigh Lift?

A thigh lift is surgery to tighten, lift, and smooth loose, hanging skin on the inner or outer thighs and remove accumulations of excess fat. With aging or significant weight loss, the skin on the thighs can stretch and lose resilience. Fat that accumulates in the thighs can be resistant to slimming with diet and exercise. A thigh lift corrects a flabby, sagging appearance in the thighs by removing excess skin and fat from the thighs and lifting and tightening the underlying tissues.

Why Might I Consider an Arm Lift or Thigh Lift?

Age or significant weight loss can leave your upper arms or thighs looking flabby and droopy. Your skin can lose elasticity and begin to hang loosely. Correcting this stretched, sagging appearance in the upper arms or thighs with an arm lift or thigh lift can make you not only look healthier but also years younger.

Am I a Good Candidate for an Arm Lift or Thigh Lift?

You may be a good candidate for an arm lift or thigh lift if you’re bothered by hanging skin in your upper arms or loose, stretched skin in your thighs, whether you also have accumulations of excess fat in the same area or not. Ideal candidates for these procedures:

  • Have realistic expectations for the outcome of the surgery
  • Are in good overall health
  • Are not significantly overweight and maintain a stable weight
  • Do not smoke, or are able to quit smoking for several weeks before and after the procedure

How Is an Arm Lift or Thigh Lift Performed?

Arm lift or thigh lift surgery is usually performed under general anesthesia. In some cases, local anesthesia with sedation will be used. Dr. Loizides will explain his surgical plan, including where the incisions will be made, during your consultation.

In a typical arm lift procedure, Dr. Loizides makes an incision along the inside of the upper arm, from the armpit to the elbow, where the resulting scar is hidden when the arms are hanging at rest. If only minimal skin tightening is needed, an incision within the armpit may be all that’s needed.

In a thigh lift procedure, the placement of the incisions will depend on the changes to be made and whether the loose skin is on the inner thigh or the outer thigh. In some cases, the incisions are limited to the groin area. In other cases, they may extend down the inner thigh to the knee or from the groin around the hip to the back.

Once the incisions are made, Dr. Loizides tightens the underlying tissues to improve the contours of the arms or thighs, then he removes a section of excess skin, lifting, tightening, and smoothing the remaining skin. If excess fat is being removed, he may also use liposuction. The incisions are then closed. Drains and compression garments may be used to minimize post-operative swelling. The procedure typically takes two or three hours.

After the surgery is complete and you are fully alert, you will be able to go home. You should arrange ahead of time to have a friend or family member drive you home when you are discharged and stay with you overnight.

What to Expect in Recovery

Expect to feel some discomfort, swelling, and bruising at first, and plan to spend a few days resting quietly at home. The recovery process varies from person to person, but most patients require a week to ten days off work. Typically, light activities and exercises can be resumed after two weeks, building up to more strenuous activities at four to six weeks.

Dr. Loizides will provide you with complete instructions on:

  • Activities that are recommended and those that should be avoided
  • How to care for the incisions
  • Steps to take to manage swelling and discomfort
  • When to come in for follow-up visits to check on your progress
