What Are Moles, Cysts, and Lipomas?
Moles are small skin growths that form when pigment cells grow in clusters. They can range in color from pink to dark brown. Moles that are evenly colored, narrower than a pencil eraser, smooth, and round with distinct edges are generally not a health concern. Larger, multicolored moles with indistinct edges are considered atypical and may indicate a risk of skin cancer.
Cysts are fluid-filled lumps that form beneath the skin. They can form when a hair follicle is blocked or for many other reasons. Most have an opening at the skin’s surface (the punctum), through which fluid may drain. Cysts are usually harmless, but can become inflamed or infected or can rupture and leak their contents into the surrounding tissues.
Lipomas are fatty lumps that form beneath the skin. They are typically dome-shaped and soft to the touch. When pressed, they can appear to move. Most lipomas are small, less than 2 inches (50 mm) across, but they can grow larger. Lipomas can be painful when they put pressure on nerves.
Why Might I Consider Mole, Cyst, or Lipoma Removal?
Normal moles and small cysts and lipomas usually don’t require treatment, though you might choose to have them removed for cosmetic reasons. A doctor may recommend the removal of an atypical mole to reduce the risk of skin cancer. A larger cyst or lipoma might need to be removed if it becomes inflamed or infected. When a cyst or lipoma grows large enough to be noticeable or unsightly, it’s common to have it removed with a cosmetic procedure.
How Are Moles, Cysts, and Lipomas Removed?
Dr. Loizides uses different methods to remove moles, cysts, and lipomas, depending on their size, shape, and location. For atypical moles, he also considers the risk of malignancy and takes precautions with their removal.
Moles may be removed by surgical excision, cutting around the mole and closing the wound with stitches, or by shaving the mole down to the level of the surrounding skin.
Cysts may be treated by puncturing and draining the fluid or by surgical excision, cutting around the cyst and closing the wound with stitches. Because a cyst opens to the surface of the skin, removal typically involves removing some skin.
Lipomas may be removed by suctioning the fatty lump using a needle and syringe or by making a small incision and inserting a fine tube in a technique similar to liposuction. More complete removal is achieved by making an incision through the skin above the lump and cutting out all the lipoma tissue. The layers of remaining tissue are then closed with sutures.

What to Expect in the Treatment
Mole, cyst, and lipoma removal procedures are performed in our office. We use a local anesthetic to minimize your discomfort, and we may give you a sedative to help you relax. As part of your consultation, Dr. Loizides will explain the surgical approach he proposes, the expected length of the procedure, and whether you will be given a sedative.
After the surgery is complete and you are fully alert, you will be able to go home. If you have been given a sedative for the procedure, you should arrange ahead of time to have a friend or family member drive you home.
