Facelift in Ottawa with Dr. Photis Loizides
A facelift, or rhytidectomy, is surgery to correct loosened skin on the mid to lower part of the face to restore a younger appearance. A facelift reverses the changes caused by aging, gravity, and environmental factors that can result in jowls, sagging cheeks, and unwanted facial lines and wrinkles.
Facelift techniques have improved through the years. Today’s facelift, in the hands of a skilled and experienced surgeon like Dr. Photis Loizides, produces amazingly natural-looking plastic surgery results.
Muscles and connective tissues below the skin are restructured, excess skin and fat are removed, and facial skin is smoothed and gently tightened. The changes made are significant and long-lasting—they can make you look and feel years younger—but are also so subtle that people you meet won’t suspect you’ve had plastic surgery.
Dr. Loizides offers facelift surgery in Ottawa to help patients look as young as they feel. Dr. Loizides is a plastic surgeon fully accredited with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. With his extensive training and deep expertise in cosmetic and reconstructive surgery, he consistently helps patients achieve the changes they are seeking with natural-looking plastic surgery results.

Why Should I Consider a Facelift?
You might consider a facelift if you’re bothered by signs of aging in your face and those changes have advanced to the point that they can’t be corrected to your satisfaction by less invasive treatments, such as Botox® and dermal fillers.
A facelift can correct:
- Loose, sagging skin on the lower face, below the eyes
- Jowls
- Wrinkles, lines, and creases on the cheeks, jawline, and lower eyelids
- Displaced fat in the lower face, such as cheeks that have hollowed with age
The improvements made in a facelift are long-lasting. Where non-surgical facial-rejuvenation treatments like injectables must be repeated every few months for sustained results, facelift results can last for 10 to 15 years.
A facelift can also be combined with other procedures, such as a neck lift, brow lift, or eyelid lift for a more comprehensive facial rejuvenation.
Types of Facelifts
A facelift is a highly customized procedure. During your consultation, Dr. Loizides will examine your face to plan the surgery to address your particular needs and enhance your unique facial features.
Depending on the mildness or severity of your facial skin laxity, he will likely plan your procedure following one of two main approaches:
A full (or “standard”) facelift corrects moderate to advanced facial aging using incisions in the natural folds of the ears, along the hairline, and under the chin. A full facelift corrects jowls and sagging skin under the chin, gives definition to the jawline, and smooths creases around the mouth.
A mini facelift uses shorter incisions, typically along the hairline, to correct moderate sagging in the lower face and the early stages of jowls.
These approaches are modified and customized to address each patient’s needs. For women who prefer to pull their hair back in a ponytail, for example, Dr. Loizides may hide the scars in the natural fold of the ear, rather than along the hairline. For men, he may plan the surgery to strengthen the appearance of the jawline, using minimal incisions that are placed where they won’t be noticed, even with short hair.

Am I a Good Candidate for a facelift?
The best candidates for any cosmetic surgery have realistic expectations for the procedure and a good understanding of the changes that can be made and the care required in healing from the surgery. You may be ready for a facelift if you find that your regular skin-care routine, using skin creams and other products, no longer makes you look as young and fresh as you would like, and that non-surgical treatments, such as Botox and dermal fillers, can’t hide the changes of aging.
You may be a good candidate for a facelift if you are:
- Bothered by moderate to severe skin loosening and sagging on the lower part of your face
- In generally good health
- Close to your ideal weight
Facelift surgery is not generally recommended if you:
- Smoke
- Have certain health conditions that can increase the risk of the procedure or interfere with healing
How Is a Facelift Performed?
Facelift surgery is performed using general anesthesia (for a full facelift) or local anesthesia with mild sedation (for some mini facelifts). As part of your consultation, Dr. Loizides will explain the surgical approach he proposes for your procedure.
Depending on the changes to be made, incisions may be made:
- In the natural folds around the ear
- Behind the edge of the hairline
- In the natural crease under the chin, along the jawline
In a deep plane facelift, muscles and supportive tissues below the skin (the musculoaponeurotic system or SMAS) are repositioned over the cheekbones to provide structure for the newly smoothed skin of the lower face.
Excess skin is removed. Fat that has settled in the lower cheeks or jawline is removed or moved to locations to restore a younger look, such as the cheeks or under the eyes. Fine sutures are used to close external incisions in a way that minimizes visible scarring.
The procedure typically takes two to three hours, depending on the extent of the procedure. After the surgery is complete and you are fully alert, you will be able to go home. You should arrange ahead of time to have a friend or family member drive you home when you are discharged and stay with you for at least the first night.
What to Expect During Recovery
Following your Ottawa facelift, you will need to stay home from work and limit your activities for 10 to 14 days after surgery to give your face time to heal. You may feel some tightness at first, and possibly some discomfort, which can be treated with pain medication. You’ll be instructed to keep your head elevated and apply ice packs or cold packs during the first week to promote healing and reduce any initial swelling or bruising.
After a few days of rest, you can gradually resume some activity, following Dr. Loizides’s care instructions. This will be limited to light activity at first, gradually building up to more strenuous activities after three to four weeks. Any lingering bruising can be concealed with makeup after about two weeks, or once the incisions have healed.
Dr. Loizides will provide you with complete care instructions during the healing process, including when he’d like to see you for follow-up visits. He will be available to answer any questions you have and address any concerns.

FAQ
Facelift
A mini facelift targets early signs of aging, primarily in the lower face and jawline, using smaller incisions for a quicker recovery and subtler result. It’s a great option for younger patients or those with mild sagging who want a refresh without a more extensive surgery. A full facelift, on the other hand, addresses more advanced aging signs by tightening deeper tissues, repositioning fat, and removing excess skin from the lower face, jowls, and neck. Dr. Loizides will recommend the right approach for you based on your anatomy and the level of correction you desire.
While a facelift primarily targets the lower face and jawline, it can improve the upper neck by lifting and tightening the skin and underlying muscles. However, if you have significant neck sagging, combining your facelift with a dedicated neck lift can create a smoother, more youthful neckline. This combination is common and ensures the face and neck age harmoniously for a balanced, natural appearance.
Facelift results are long-lasting—typically around 10 to 15 years—but they won’t stop the natural aging process altogether. Your refreshed appearance will continue to age more gracefully than without surgery. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle, protecting your skin from sun exposure, and following a good skincare routine can help prolong your results. Non-surgical touch-up treatments, like Botox, dermal fillers, or skin-tightening procedures, can also extend the youthful look achieved by your facelift.
Modern facelift techniques prioritize natural results by repositioning deeper tissues, not just tightening the skin. Dr. Loizides uses advanced techniques to restore facial structure and volume, avoiding the over-tightened or windblown look associated with outdated methods. The goal is to help you look like a younger, well-rested version of yourself—not like someone else entirely.
Dr. Loizides carefully places facelift incisions along the hairline and around the natural curves of the ears to minimize visibility. Once healed, scars are typically very discreet and fade over time. Following proper aftercare, including avoiding sun exposure and using scar creams if recommended, helps ensure the scars remain as inconspicuous as possible.
To keep your facelift looking its best for years to come, maintain a consistent skincare routine focused on hydration, collagen support, and sun protection. Non-surgical treatments like dermal fillers, laser resurfacing, or Botox can help address new signs of aging that develop over time. Healthy lifestyle choices, such as staying hydrated, eating a nutrient-rich diet, and avoiding smoking, also play a major role in preserving your youthful, rejuvenated look.
Many patients choose to combine their facelift with complementary procedures like eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty), a brow lift, or a neck lift to achieve more comprehensive rejuvenation. Non-surgical treatments, such as laser resurfacing for skin texture or fat transfer for volume restoration, can further enhance results. Dr. Loizides will customize a treatment plan based on your unique needs and desired outcome to ensure a balanced, natural look.
Fillers and Botox are excellent for maintaining a youthful appearance and addressing early signs of aging, but they can only do so much. When volume loss, sagging skin, or deep folds become more pronounced, a facelift may provide the more dramatic, longer-lasting improvement you’re looking for. Many patients find that a facelift gives them a refreshed, youthful foundation, and they continue using injectables afterward to maintain their results.
