Am I a Good Candidate for Breast Augmentation Surgery in Ottawa?
The best candidates for breast augmentation has realistic expectations for the results of the procedure and an understanding of the risks.
Health Canada has approved saline breast implants for women aged 18 and older and silicone breast implants for women aged 22 and older.
Breast augmentation can help with minimally drooping breasts but cannot correct moderate to significant sagging. A breast lift is the solution for sagging breasts and can be combined with a breast augmentation procedure.
You may be a good candidate for breast augmentation surgery if you have:
- Small breasts or breasts that are smaller or flatter than you would like
- Asymmetric breasts (breasts that are not the same size)
- Misshapen breasts, in a form and from a cause that can be corrected with implants
Breast augmentation surgery is not generally recommended if you:
- Smoke
- Have certain health conditions, such as diabetes or heart problems
- Have masses in your breasts, as detected in a breast exam
- Are significantly overweight

What Are My Breast Implant Options?
Breast augmentation is a highly individualized procedure, with many options to choose from to tailor the outcome to your needs and wishes and the unique features of your body. The options include:
- Saline implants are filled with a sterile solution of salty water. One advantage of saline implants is that if the shell leaks or ruptures, the saline solution is naturally absorbed by the body with no health effects. An emptied saline shell does, however, have a cosmetic effect, leaving the affected breast smaller or flatter. A “structured” or Ideal implant minimizes the risk of noticeable deflation by holding the saline solution in separate internal chambers.
- Silicone implants are filled with silicone gel that matches the density and flexibility of breast tissue for a more natural appearance and feel. When a silicone implant ruptures, the gel typically stays in place, so the leak may not be noticeable except on a mammogram. When a rupture is detected, the implant should be surgically removed or replaced within a few months to a year. “Gummy bear” implants are made from a thicker form of silicone that retains its shape even when the shell ruptures.
- Round implants are circular when laid flat on a surface and viewed from above. A round implant adds fullness to both the upper and lower parts of the breast.
- Contoured or “teardrop” implants are shaped to enhance the fullness of the lower part of the breast.
- Implants are made in different widths to fit women with narrow or wide chest frames.
- Implants are made in various thicknesses to create a low, moderate, or high profile when the breast is viewed from the side.
Breast implants can be placed either within the breast tissue and above the chest muscles (subglandular placement) or below the chest muscles (subpectoral placement). Each placement option has its advantages depending on the enhancement to be made and your lifestyle.
The incisions are made where resulting scars will not be noticeable, with the placement determined by the changes to be made. That might be in a curve along the crease below the breast (inframammary incision) or in a circle or half-circle around the edge of the areola (periareolar incision).
A modest increase in breast size can be made without implants, using the fat transfer (or autologous fat grafting) technique. Fat is removed from another part of the body, using liposuction, then processed for injection into the breasts. Fat transfer can slim one part of your body — your abdomen or thighs, for example — while adding volume to your breasts.

How Is Breast Augmentation Surgery Performed in Ottawa, ON?
Breast implant surgery is usually performed under general anesthesia. Incisions are made along the crease under the breast or around the areola, following the plan discussed with Dr. Loizides in your consultation. A pocket is created in the breast tissue or below the chest muscle into which the implant is placed. Once the implant is centered behind the nipple, the pocket and the incisions are closed. Dissolvable sutures are used to close the tissue below the skin. Your breasts are then covered with a sterile dressing and your compression bra.
Breast implant surgery usually takes about one hour or a bit longer if combined with a breast lift or liposuction.
Breast augmentation using fat transfer involves only minimal incisions where the fat is removed with liposuction. It is usually performed using a local anesthetic and sedation.
After the procedure is complete and you are fully alert, you will be able to go home. You should arrange ahead of time to have a friend or family member drive you home when you are discharged and stay with you for the first night.
What to Expect in Breast Augmentation Recovery
Once at home, you do not have to change your bandages. Dr. Loizides will help you with the first dressing change at a follow-up appointment three to five days after your surgery.
The recovery process varies from person to person, but most patients require one to two weeks off work. Typically, low-impact exercise can be resumed after two weeks. All other activities can gradually be resumed after [four to] six weeks.

FAQ
Breast Augmentation
I like to use several methods to determine the best implant for my patients. The most important thing is that we measure the diameter of the breast, which helps determine a range of implant sizes that would fit nicely. I ask patients to bring one or a few photographs of the type.
During your consultation, you and your surgeon will discuss your goals and the look you are hoping for. Once we have an idea of the size range that will achieve those goals, you place sample implants of different sizes into your bra to get a sense of the volume changes that you can expect with different-size implants. This gives you and your surgeon a great idea of what implants you’re looking for. I usually see my patients a second time before surgery to go over this exercise again.
Cohesive Gel (Silicone) implants tend to have a more natural look and feel.
Cleavage depends on your breast position.
It allows for a more controlled and less invasive insertion of implants, reducing contact with the breast tissue and potentially minimizing the risk of infection and capsular contracture.
It involves handling the implant as little as possible to reduce contamination and preserve tissue integrity.
An internal bra or GalaFLEX may be needed when additional support is required for the breast tissue, often in cases of significant sagging or when larger implants are used. That being said, I like to use an internal bra for most breast augmentations to minimize future sagging.
If you have significant breast sagging, implants alone may not provide the desired lift or shape, and you may need to combine them with a breast lift.
Yes, the surgery is typically performed under general anesthesia, ensuring that you are comfortable and pain-free during the procedure.
Yes, it is possible to have someone stay with you after surgery, as you may feel groggy from anesthesia and will need assistance.
Post-surgery, wearing a supportive bra is recommended to help with healing and maintain the position of the implants.
Recovery depends on the individual but generally involves taking it easy for a few weeks; walking can often be resumed after a few days and light exercise within a couple of weeks, but more strenuous activities should be avoided for at least a month.
You can return to work within a week or two, depending on the nature of your job.
Mammograms can still be performed after breast implants, but it’s important to inform the technician about the implants.
It is rare to use drains after a primary breast augmentation.
Sutures will dissolve on their own and do not need to be removed.
Nipple sensation can be affected post-surgery; however, many women regain full sensation.
Breast implants are not lifetime devices and may need to be replaced after several years due to factors like wear and tear or changes in appearance.
Early complications include infection and excess bleeding but are quite rare. Longer-term complications include capsular contracture and implant rupture.
Scarring is inevitable, but Dr. Loizides will create the smallest scar possible, usually in the fold underneath the breast to minimize visible scarring.
Implants can break. They can be identified by sudden changes in breast shape or size or even a feeling of firmness around the breast.
If your breasts feel tight after surgery, it is generally normal, though you should follow Dr. Loizides’ guidelines on movement and activity.
