Botox in Ottawa, Ontario with Dr. Loizides

Botox® and Xeomin® are injectable treatments that smooth expression lines on the face, especially around the eyes and mouth, to restore a younger and more relaxed appearance. Both Botox and Xeomin are neuromodulators. They work by reducing muscle contractions in parts of the face where those muscle movements are causing deep lines and creases.

Dr. Photis Loizides offers Botox treatments in Ottawa to women and men who would like to soften facial creases and restore their more youthful look. Dr. Loizides is a plastic surgeon fully accredited by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. With his extensive training and unmatched expertise in cosmetic and reconstructive surgery, he consistently helps patients achieve the changes they are seeking with natural-looking medical spa results.

How Does Botox Work?

Botox and Xeomin are neuromodulators, which means they modulate the nerve signals that trigger muscle contractions. When injected into facial muscles, neuromodulators reduce the intensity of these nerve signals. The treated muscles can relax, allowing the skin on the surface of the skin to smooth. Both Botox and Xeomin are formulated from purified forms of botulinum toxin. (Dysport® and Nuceiva are two other neuromodulators derived from botulinum toxin that have also been approved for cosmetic treatment in Canada.)

The effects of treatment with Botox and other injectable neuromodulators are temporary. The treated muscles remain relaxed, and the skin above them is smooth, for a few months. When the results begin to fade, the treatments can be repeated.

Why Might I Consider Treatment with Botox?

You might consider treatment with Botox, Xeomin, or another neuromodulator if you are bothered by deepening lines and creases around your eyes or mouth—creases caused by facial expressions and the contraction of facial muscles. Injections of Botox or Xeomin can smooth lines and creases around the eyes and mouth, including:

  • crow’s feet
  • frown lines
  • horizontal forehead lines
  • smile creases
  • vertical lines above the lips

Botox can also be used to lift the corners of the mouth and reduce banding on the neck.

Botox has non-cosmetic uses, too. It can be used to treat chronic migraines and hyperhidrosis, or excessive sweating.

Botox and other injectable treatments are most effective in temporarily reversing the early signs of facial aging. For significant sagging and wrinkling, surgical treatment, such as a facelift or brow lift, will be more effective and give longer-lasting results.

What Happens in a Botox Treatment Session?

Botox injections are performed in our office. We may use a topical anesthetic to minimize discomfort during treatment. A very fine needle is used to precisely inject small amounts of Botox into the specific muscles that are responsible for creating lines and wrinkles on your face. Depending on the areas being treated, you may have multiple injections. Five or more injections may be required for treating frown lines, for example, and two or three on each side of the face for crow’s feet.

Treatment usually takes about 15 to 30 minutes. When the treatment is complete, you are free to resume most of your normal daily activities.

What to Expect After Botox Treatment

There is no down time or recovery period after Botox treatment. Dr. Loizides will instruct you not to rub or massage the treated areas for the first 24 hours. This is to keep the botulinum toxin in place as it starts to have its intended effect on the muscles.

You’ll begin to see results from the treatment in 3 to 7 days. Those results will typically last for 3 or 4 months. When the results begin to wear off, you can schedule a follow-up treatment.

FAQ

Botox

Dr. Loizides will give you instructions on preparing for your Botox treatment. This will include avoiding alcohol for the week before the treatment and stopping the use of aspirin and other anti-inflammatory medications that thin the blood. This is to minimize the risk of bruising after treatment.

Botox, Xeomin, and other neuromodulators smooth lines and creases by relaxing the underlying expression muscles. Dermal fillers smooth wrinkles and lines by adding volume to the lower and middle layers of the skin. Dermal fillers can also stimulate the production of collagen, a compound that helps the skin remain flexible. Treatment with Botox and dermal fillers is often performed on different parts of the face for a more comprehensive rejuvenating effect.

No. Botox and Xeomin treatments are popular for both men and women. Men, as well as women, are bothered by crow’s feet and forehead lines that can make them look older than they feel.
