Will a Tummy Tuck Remove Stretch Marks?

Stretch marks are often your body telling a significant part of your life story whether it be pregnancy, weight changes, growth, or all of the above, but that doesn’t mean you want to keep them forever. If you’ve wondered whether a tummy tuck could finally smooth them away, this is actually a common question board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Photis Loizides is presented with during tummy tuck consultations. In this blog, we’ll go over how tummy tuck surgery affects stretch marks, why location matters, and what outcomes patients typically see. Before you make any decisions, here’s some clarity that you might be looking for.

Can a Tummy Tuck Remove Stretch Marks?

Stretch marks are part of the skin itself, so the only effective way to remove them is to remove the skin they’re on. A tummy tuck can remove stretch marks, but only the ones located on the lower abdomen below the belly button. During a tummy tuck surgery, this area of skin is completely removed as part of the excess skin excision process. Stretch marks above the belly button or on the hips, sides, or upper abdomen typically cannot be removed, but they often look smoother and less noticeable after the skin is tightened and repositioned.

Even if stretch marks remain, patients usually see improvements because of the following benefits:

  • Skin tightening makes remaining stretch marks look flatter and less stretched.
  • Skin repositioning moves some stretch marks lower on the abdomen where they’re easier to conceal.
  • Overall contouring creates a smoother, firmer appearance that draws attention away from remaining marks.

What Are Stretch Marks, and What Causes Them?

Stretch marks are small, scar-like lines that form when the skin stretches faster than it can naturally keep up. When the skin is forced to rapidly stretch like during pregnancy or fast weight gain, the stretching causes tiny tears in the dermis, the deeper layers of the skin responsible for elasticity. As these tears heal, they leave behind visible streaks that can appear red, purple, pink, or eventually fade to white or silver toned skin.

Stretch marks develop when the skin is pushed beyond its ability to stretch smoothly. The most common causes include:

  • Pregnancy
  • Weight gain or loss
  • Growth spurts
  • Genetics
  • Hormonal changes
  • Rapid muscle building

How Does a Tummy Tuck Actually Work?

A tummy tuck works by removing excess skin, tightening stretched abdominal muscles, and repositioning the remaining skin to create a flatter, smoother abdomen. During the procedure, Dr. Loizides makes a low incision along the bikini line, lifts the abdominal skin, repairs weakened abdominal muscles, and removes the loose skin that often contains stretch marks. The remaining skin is then pulled downward and sutured into a tighter contour.

Which Stretch Marks Cannot Be Removed Through Surgery?

A tummy tuck typically cannot remove stretch marks that are located above the belly button, on the upper abdomen, hips, flanks, or sides of the waist. These areas fall outside the section of skin that is typically removed during surgery. Because stretch marks are part of the deeper layers of the skin, they can only be eliminated if the skin they’re on is physically removed, and a tummy tuck primarily focuses on the lower abdominal area.

What Improvements Are Still Possible Even If They Aren’t Removed?

Even when stretch marks can’t be completely surgically removed, a tummy tuck can still create significant visual improvements. Because the procedure tightens, smooths, and repositions the abdominal skin, remaining stretch marks often look lighter, flatter, and far less noticeable. Many patients feel their stretch marks blend in more naturally with the newly tightened contour once they’ve complete healed from surgery and often find great success from topical treatments like creams to help lighten and heal stretch marks in other locations.

How Does Tummy Tuck Compare to Other Stretch Mark Treatments?

While a tummy tuck is the only treatment that can physically remove stretch marks, there are other treatments that can improve their color, texture, and visibility, but they may not remove the marks entirely.

Other tummy treatments you can pursue include:

  • Laser Treatments: Laser treatments for stretch marks can improve color and texture by stimulating your body’s production of collagen, making stretch marks less noticeable.
  • Body Microneedling: Microneedling treatments create controlled micro-injuries that boost collagen and smooth the appearance of stretch marks. This method works best for newer marks.
  • Radiofrequency or RF Microneedling: RF or RF Microneedling treatments work for stretch marks by tightening the skin and improving overall texture, offering stronger results than microneedling alone, but they still cannot eliminate stretch marks altogether.
  • Topical creams and retinoids: Some of the best medically prescribed topical creams or lotions that include retinoids may lighten or soften stretch marks when used continuously.

How Can Stretch Marks Be Prevented Altogether?

While it’s not always possible to prevent stretch marks completely because genetics and hormones don’t always cooperate, there are several proven ways to reduce the likelihood and severity of stretch marks as the skin stretches. Prevention focuses on keeping the skin hydrated, elastic, and supported during periods of rapid growth or change.

  • Maintain steady, gradual weight changes.
  • Keep the skin deeply moisturized.
  • Use topical retinoids when appropriate and approved by a dermatologist or physician.
  • Support your body’s collagen production by boosting vitamin C, protein intake, and overall nutrition that helps with skin repair.
  • Stay well-hydrated by drinking plenty of water which keeps the skin more resilient and less prone to tearing.
  • Exercise regularly with strength training and consistent cardio activities to help maintain healthy skin tension and circulation.
  • Use doctor-approved, pregnancy-safe belly oils and creams.
